Rock of Ages

Filed under: Film — rvchua @ 10:54 am

Just two words (musical and Tom Cruise) makes me want to avoid this film. I found it long with a tepid storyline and uninteresting characters. But the film does have its moments especially in the musical parts. Who can’t resist listening to 80s rock songs? I thought the best musical number would have been Tom Cruise (as Stacee Jaxx) and Malin Akerman (as Constance Sack) singing “I Want to Know What Love Is”. This was eclipsed by Alec Baldwin (as Dennis Dupree) and Russell Brand (as Lonny Barnett) singing to each other “Can’t Fight This Feeling”, absolutely sweet and hilarious.

The main characters are boring (Drew and Sherrie) and supporting characters tend to be cardboard but helped by overtop acting especially by Tom Cruise. However the singing by the real actors are ordinary. Cruise’s singing is often erratic. The only strong singing I remember came from Mary J. Blige.

Overall the movie is enjoyable for probably a total of twenty minutes.
