Bright Star

Filed under: Film — rvchua @ 11:45 am

I watched North and South again during the weekend and how I have missed it! I can’t believe that this adaptation is already 12 years old and Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage are still as good back then.

I am looking for another period romance. Bright Star is about the love story between John Keats and Fanny Brawne which doesn’t end well with Keats’ early death. I am looking for a copy of this gorgeous movie.

Wonder Woman

Filed under: Film — Tags: — rvchua @ 11:14 am

I can’t wait for the Wonder Woman movie to come out next year. She was amazing in Batman vs Superman and more than able to confront Doomsday directly. Henry Cavill’s Superman is the most unlikable Superman I have ever come across and I am just bored with Batman, too many films, tv shows and comics of him. When Wonder Woman came out in her costume, her shield, her arm bands, her lasso, I was so happy to see her especially that she could do more than Superman!

I don’t want to raise my expectations too much about the movie but I hope they put considerable scenes with the Amazons especially with Hippolyta and Antiope. The image below shows so much promise.

Jane Austen’s Love & Friendship

I cannot understand why I have never read Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan? This needs to be remedied as soon as possible despite having 30 books lined up in my TBR!

1995 Version of Persuasion

Filed under: Film — Tags: — rvchua @ 1:25 am

Persuasion1995coverThe 2007 version of Persuasion is one of the films I watch when I feel sad. My favorite scene is when Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth meet again, he barely acknowledges her. Then we see Anne crying while writing on her diary. However I hate the ending when Anne runs all over Bath looking for Wentworth and that awkward kiss in the street!

I have seen before the earlier 1995 version with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root. Last night I watched it again and was able to appreciate it better. This version is less polished and more subdued. Wentworth’s clothes are grimy when they are shooting pheasants. Anne’s clothes are plain and simple but they are better than the odious ones in the 2007 version. I am starting to think the Ciaran Hinds is the better Wentworth though Rupert Penry-Jones looks dashing in his costume. My favorite scene is Wentworth writing the letter while listening to Anne and Captain Harville talk about the constancy of a woman’s love. Wentworth reads out loud off camera, “You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.” Oh my!

Interesting to note is that Anne’s sister Mary is played by Sophie Thompson who is the sister of Emma Thompson who starred and wrote the screenplay for 1995’s Sense and Sensibility. Also, Sophie Thompson is married to Richard Lumsden who played Robert Ferrars in the 1995 Sense and Sensibility. Victoria Hamilton who plays Henrietta Musgrove has also appeared as Mrs. Foster in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice and Maria Bertram in the 1999 Mansfield Park.

Only Yesterday

Filed under: Film — Tags: — rvchua @ 11:24 am

I always prefer the Japanese version of Studio Ghibli films. I feel that they add a lot of unnecessary things that are not in the original. Only Yesterday (Omoide Poro Poro) is not one of my Ghibli favorites but there are parts that I always find melancholic. The English dubbed version also looks poignant, it releases today.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

I have zero interest to read the book but this movie trailer is kickass. It becomes more interesting with the participation of Cersei (Lena Headey as Lady Catherine de Burgh) and Tywin (Charles Dance as Mr. Bennet). Also, period romance movies are my go-to when I am miserable.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Honest Trailer

I completely agree on this. Loki was a much better villain, Ultron with his metallic face was too unrelatable. Although the movie was almost 2.5 hours long, there wasn’t enough screen time for everyone. Despite all of that, I have watched this more than twice! I like the party scene where everyone was relaxed, the most memorable was the part where everyone had their hand in trying to lift Thor’s hammer. I guess if you don’t really read about Scarlet Witch, Ultron, Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos, etc. you really won’t appreciate a lot of details.

Whenever I find myself facing a big problem, I now ask myself: What would Furiosa do?

Answer is Redemption!

The movie looks lovely. Maybe I should read the book? Who will Bathsheba choose? Or will she choose at all?
